The North Antelope Rochelle Mine is the second largest coal mine in the USA, producing over 100 million tonnes of coal per year. It is an open cast mine in the Powder River Basin, which underlies parts of Wyoming and Montana and is the largest area of coal production in North America, which was formed by the merger of two smaller mines (North Antelope and Rochelle) in 1999, and held the title of largest coal mine in America until 201, when it was overtaken by the merger of the Black Thunder and Jacob's Ranch mines into a single unit (also in the Power River Basin).

Coal at the North Antelope Rochelle Mine is extracted from the Wyodak-Anderson Coal Seem, which is 20-25 m thick and buried beneath 30-120 m of overburden (overlying rock). The Wyodak-Anderson coal is thought to have been laid down in coastal forests around the North American Interior Seaway during the Cretaceous Period (when global temperatures, and hence sea-levels, were much higher), around 144-65 million years ago.
